The Community

Celina is known for its celebration of authentic culture. Its signature event, CajunFest, as well as several other family-oriented events including Parkfest, Fri- day Night Farmer’s Markets, Movies on the Square, Splash and Blast 4th of July Celebration, Trick or Treat on the Square and Christmas on the Square promote a  community identity. For adults, several local wineries promote an interest in culture and good wine.

HISTORY OF CELINA, TEXAS

Although  Celina was not established until 1876, settlers came into the area at a much earlier date. In October 1879 a little settlement began to form a few miles southwest of the present-day Celina. John T. Mulkey, Celina ’s first Postmaster, renamed the town after Celina, Tennessee. The Methodist church was built in 1880, and also doubled as the school for a while.  By 1885, a general store, mill and a drug store had been opened in “Old  Celina’. When the railroad came through town in 1902, residents made the effort to move the town’s actual main street eastward toward the tracks. The result is where the town square stands today. Celina has always been a Small City, with a Big Vision!

GEOGRAPHY

Celina is a city in Collin and Denton counties, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, Celina had a population of 6,028, up from 1,861 at the 2000 census. It is located at 33°19′11″N 96°46′58″W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.2 square miles (36.7 km2), of which 14.0 square miles (36.3 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.4 km2), or 1.10%, is water.

Running north/south through the town is State Highway 289 (locally known as Preston Road). It starts near downtown Dallas and terminates near Sherman. Celina is located about equidistant between downtown Dallas and the Oklahoma border.

Being mostly farm and ranch land, the terrain is largely open fields on flat-to-gently-rolling terrain. The ambient air temperature is typically 4 to 6 °F cooler than Dallas 30 miles (48 km) south.

Celina is served by the Celina Independent School District and home to the Celina High School Bobcats. Celina has 1 primary school (serving grades pre-K and Kindergarten), 2 elementary schools—Celina Elementary School and Odell Elementary (serving children in 1st through 5th grade), one middle school Celina Middle School for grade 6; one junior high Celina Junior High School covering grades 7 & 8; and a high school Celina High School.
